Sea Change Corporation Launches WebClarity Resource Registry

(Concord, Ontario) Sea Change Corporation announces the launch of the WebClarity Resource Registry. The Resource Registry is a central index of information databases which are accessible on the Internet and are directly searchable using industry standard search protocols including Z39.50, LDAP, WHOIS and WAIS. The Resource Registry can be thought of as a “database of databases”; an Internet site where Internet resources are described and where researchers can discover information resources that they might not otherwise have located. This directory is restricted to information databases that can be accessed electronically using standardized search protocols - not just through a web browser.

The most common internet research tool is a simple browser, used to connect to a web-site or a web-based interface to a database. The WebClarity Resource Registry facilitates access to the vast resources that also support more sophisticated protocols. Finding these resources and connecting to them has been an arduous task, as the information was either unavailable or spread out over the Internet. “The Resource Registry facilitates the discovery of searchable databases that were, until now, largely unknown to the general searching community.” notes Paul Nixon, Vice President of Business Development for Sea Change Corporation.

The Resource Registry database is designed to be updated & maintained by database publishers as a mechanism for increasing awareness and usage of their database. Our objective is to offer the most comprehensive central database in the world of information publishers who support "second generation" searching protocols. We encourage all publishers to register their databases in the WebClarity Resource Registry and to ensure that their descriptive information records are accurate and up-to-date. The database currently indexes close to 1000 searchable resource centers, government databases and libraries, filled with a wealth of information ranging from geo-spatial data to multi-media catalogs.

The system is designed to be incorporated by software developers as a foundation for developing more sophisticated search tools, by providing a robust subsystem for discovering searchable resources. The Resource Registry acts as an intermediary by providing a programming interface ("API"), that allows it to be queried by search software and to automatically download comprehensive and accurate information about available information resources. Sea Change offers a software toolkit to developers to allow them to take advantage of this facility. Developers of sophisticated search software tools are now able to rely on a sophisticated resource locating subsystem.

Sea Change Corporation has long maintained an extensive and growing list of Internet resources in its flagship BookWhereTM product. The development of the Resource Registry means that maintenance will become a cooperative effort between both Sea Change Corporation and respective database administrators or “resource owners.” It ensures that information will be as accurate and current as possible.

Sea Change will be integrating Resource Registry synchronization as a key feature of future product releases, for BookWhereTM and the WebClarity Resource Gateway. Automatic synchronization with the Resource Registry will allow new information databases to be easily discovered and searched by tens of thousands of existing BookWhereTM users.

Sea Change Corporation is headquartered in Concord, Ontario Canada. The company specializes in Internet related software and services. Sea Change launched BookWhereTM, its Windows based Z39.50 client in June of 1995. BookWhereTM is currently used by thousands of libraries and researchers and is distributed worldwide by over 55 resellers. In December of 1999, Sea Change released WebClarity Resource Gateway, a web based gateway to information databases. WebClarity Resource Gateway allows access to any Internet based information database that supports the popular Z39.50 standard, using a standard Web browser.
